WHAT IS ENP?

"ENP” stands for Extended Neighborhood Patrol. Founded in 2007 in our neighborhood, we brought members on from Hockaday Neighborhood Association and Les Jardins Estates. RNA uses off-duty Dallas Police Officers in marked police cars to patrol our neighborhood. The police patrol is the primary service paid for by your membership dues.

Of the 423 homes in Royal Northaven, 209 are members of the Extended Neighborhood Patrol.

An officer is on patrol in our neighborhoods 80 hours per week.

100% of dues are dedicated to officer salaries, the DPD car/9-1-1 monitor rental, and the officers' cell phone which is for members only.

When an officer is on duty the ENP response time is only 2 ½ minutes. This compares with average Dallas Police Department response time of more than 8 minutes on a Priority 1 call. Calls with Priority 2 have a response time of more than 20 minutes.

If every home in Royal Northaven, Hockaday Estates and Les Jardins joined ENP,

we would have an officer on duty 365 days per year, 24 hours per day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the hours an officer is in our neighborhood?

It varies. At current membership levels, we are able to provide 80 hours of coverage per week, and there is an officer patrolling our neighborhood every day of the week - many days there are three different shifts. But, it is intentional that no two weeks' schedules are the same.

Are there any paid administrators?

No, the RNA Board of Directors are all volunteers; none receives any compensation and each pays full dues.

How are the dues used?

In the 2020 and 2021 fiscal years, 100% of dues are dedicated to officer salaries, the DPD car/9-1-1 monitor rental, and the ENP cell phone, which is for members only.

Who do I call?

Always call 911 first in cases of emergency, domestic disputes, disputes with neighbors, excessively loud parties, suspicious persons, theft or burglary. This will provide backup for our officers and ensure that your call is being answered as quickly as possible. One of our ten ENP team members, if on duty, will respond to the 911 call and head to your home. Our officer will acknowledge the dispatcher and inform them they are handling the call. If there is no officer on duty at the time of the call, the regular DPD protocol applies, based on the priority of the emergency.

If your need isn't an emergency (for example if you are calling to report upcoming travel plans), and you leave a message or text the ENP Security Patrol number, the next officer on duty will retrieve your message and return your call.

What about the neighbors who don't join; don't they get the advantage of a police presence without paying for it?

The ENP Security Patrol officer phone number is for members only. The officers have a list of all current paid ENP members and know to respond only to those residents. The members' yard signage is another clue for our officers as they are driving through the neighborhood. However, it is true that a visible police presence benefits all who live here. We contact non-members once each year, and YOU can help us encourage your non-member neighbors to join as well.

What about all the new residents in RNA? Does someone contact them to subscribe?

Yes, every new resident is personally contacted by one of the board members as soon as they are settled. And we encourage YOU to reach out to new neighbors and invite them to join.

What are simple, but effective tips to reduce our chances of being a crime victim?

• Install (and use) exterior lights and cameras.

• Park your cars in the garage. If this isn't possible, lock all vehicle doors and do not leave anything inside the car.

• Communicate regularly with ENP officers and your neighbors.

• Limit access to your property from the alley.

• Activate your security alarm every time you leave your house.

• Do not open your door to a solicitor, and certainly do not ever allow a solicitor inside your home.

• Cut up boxes of high value purchases and put in a trash bag.

• Do not post vacation plans or photos on social media until you return.

Our ENP Officers are also available to provide a security analysis of your home. Call or text the ENP number and you can schedule a visit from one of the officers.

When I am out of town, should I let the officers know?

Yes! Our officers want to take good care of us. If they know you are out of town, they will pay extra attention to your home and generally looking for anything suspicious. Please be sure the ENP Security Patrol number is entered in your phone contacts.

How can I help?

Renewing your membership each year is the single best way to support the ENP Program. Also, encouraging those without mailbox signage to join is how we will continue to grow the program. We are always looking for volunteers to join the Board of Directors too. If you’d like to join or get involved in the RNA Board, please reach out to rnamembership1@gmail.com.

We are fortunate that all of the officers who regularly patrol our neighborhood have been here a long time - several since the beginning.

They tell us repeatedly how nice and supportive RNA residents are to them.

Thank you for making them feel welcome and appreciated.
